Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

    About the Treatment

ERCP aides in determining and scanning the structure of the duodenum by inserting a duodenoscope through the patient`s mouth. ERCP involves the process of injecting the contrast agent into the bile and pancreatic ducts to understand the internal structure, through X-ray imaging. ERCP is also used for conducting biopsies.

  • The patient has to eat a light dinner and fast post-midnight, as the procedure is done on an empty stomach.
  • The doctor should be informed about any allergies to anaesthetic medications.

  • The ERCP procedure is done under mild sedation and may take up to 1-3 hours. After the agent for contrast is introduced into the body, the patient is asked to get into a suitable position to ensure clarity in the X-ray imaging. It may take the patient 1-2 hours post the procedure to recover from the anaesthesia.

  • It takes up to 1-2 hours for the patient to recover from the anaesthesia and sit up straight.
  • The sedation and contrast agent can cause nausea and indigestion.
  • The patient should rest the whole day after the procedure.

Specialized healthcare provisions and experienced doctors, minimize the risks and complications associated with the procedure. However, a patient should be aware of all possible risks and complications, before undergoing the procedure-

  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia during the procedure.
  • Post procedure infections.
  • Irregular bowels, vomiting and nausea, may be experienced.
