    About the Treatment

    Removal of Breast tissue is known as Mastectomy.
    Women with breast cancer usually undergo surgery. Surgery can be partial removal of breast tissue (Partial Mastectomy or Breast Conserving Therapy BCT or S) or the whole breast tissue including lymph nodes in the armpits are removed (Total Mastectomy) based on the size and site of the tumour.

    Indications

    Breast Conserving Therapy (BCT)

  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 Breast cancer.
  • Few lumps (Lymph nodes) in the breast having cancerous cells which are not too extensive.

  • Quit smoking before surgery
  • Pre - operative blood test, X-ray, MRI and other relevant tests will be done.
  • Anaesthesia clearance will be taken.
  • Fasting a night before the surgery
  • The marking may be done by the surgeon in case of BCT.
  • IV line cannula, BP cuff and EKG machine will be placed
  • General Anesthesia is given for breast surgery
  • The length of operation will be 2 to 3 hours depending on the type of procedure and spread of cancer.
  • The incision on the chest will be given to make a flap of skin. Underlying breast tissue will be removed as decided or surgeon may extend the dissection according to the spread of cancer found during surgery. Then flap of skin is closed with or without drain lines as per the need.
  • The wound is secured with a bandage.
  • Stay in the hospital will be according to the procedure done. Approximately five days up to 2 weeks depending on the type of surgery done.
  • Care of dressing and drain lines should be done.
  • Regular use of the arm should be done to avoid stiffness in the arm.
  • Do not lift or push or pull heavy objects
  • Lymphedema (swelling) of the arm
