    About the Treatment

    It is heterotopic transplant i.e. the organ is transplanted at a different location than the usual position of the organ. Pancreas received from the cadaver (brain dead donor), or part of the pancreas from a living donor is placed in the recipient`s abdomen at a different location.

  • Kidney biopsy
  • After the general anesthesia, the surgical team will give an incision on the lower side of the abdomen. The donor`s pancreas will be placed in the recipients` abdomen at a new location. Patient`s pancreas is left in place as such. The surgery will take at least 5 to 8 hours depending on the patient condition and donor organ condition. A drain line will be put in the abdomen to remove the excess fluid.

  • The patient will be required to stay for 7 to 10 days in the hospital.
  • These following should be occasionally checked:
    • Immunosuppressant medication levels
    • Creatinine levels
    • White blood cell (WBC) levels

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Suture line between the duodenum and bladder might heal poorly
  • Thrombosis (clotting) of the blood vessels of the pancreas
